Trim Reaper
[Thursday 24 October 2024] Welcome to the wild world of Trim Reaper – an explosion of mid-00s indie electro punk goodness and the latest project from Australian indie rock icons Matthew Somers (I Heart Hiroshima) and Michael Hardy (Violent Soho, Miiesha, Birds Of Tokyo…). Today, Trim Reaper reveal their debut EP, listen to Trim Reaper, including new single and focus track ‘Super Hans’ ft fellow Brisbane local Yb.
Trim Reaper draw their power from the unfiltered charm of vintage gear and unconventional recording equipment. The duo draw inspiration from bands like Suicide, LCD Soundsystem, IDLES, and Protomartyr, fusing purpose and passion to create their heavy and heartfelt art. Described as dance punk/indie electro, Somers and Hardy carve their groove with live drums, distortion, and tape machines, transforming raw energy into art that is both sincere and unpretentious. Their music tackles themes of housing affordability, wealth division, emotional empathy, and self-worth, giving a voice to the underrepresented and pushing back against the fear, ego, and cataclysm dominating today’s headlines.
listen to Trim Reaper follows on from the release of recent singles ‘Modest Salary’ and ‘Release Love’. Born from a series of 4-track cassette jams recorded in the early months of 2020, these raw sessions were later sampled and layered to become the blueprint of their debut EP. “listen to Trim Reaper is a small collection of songs, intentionally created in the rawest form this project will ever be. We wanted to bring people in with something that shows our truest self, not masking our obscurities and quirks with fancy production and expensive mixes” the duo explain of their debut EP.
“We recorded, produced and mixed everything ourselves in Mikey’s Brisbane studio and a lot of the process of creating these tracks was the journey of learning to trust our ability, and the realisation that we have something special to offer to the world, which is something that can be hard to navigate in a time when the music market is unequivocally over saturated with releases. listen to Trim Reaper is for the luck-trodden, hard working, big hearted humans who walk towards a fair future for all. We’re proud of this project, ecstatic for the future and hungry to prove what we have to offer. Long live 4 track tape machines. Long live Trim Reaper.”
