Cathode Ray Tube presents The Great Lie of the Western World

13 Feb 2012

Would you like your domestic bliss served neat or on the rocks?

Fiona (Kate Skinner) and Simon (Alistair Powning) are living the daily grind, observing the status quo, plodding through life with work and life and bills and hangovers.

But that’s what life is about, right? Life has taught us to study hard, work hard, play hard and then airbrush the wrinkles and disappointments and scars.  Will we ever be pretty or wealthy or good enough? And are these true measurements of happiness and success, anyway? Have we been trapped into believing that this is the truth? Or is it all just a lie? Perhaps, the greatest lie of all.

When Emerson (Michael Booth) arrives to crash on their couch he unpicks their clichéd domestic bliss, forcing the couple to question and confront a series of existential questions.  With the help of an unlikely accomplice, the enigmatic Paige (Jessica Donoghue), Emerson challenges societal expectations about what it is to be free, to be beautiful and to be happy.  In doing so, Emerson encourages the audience to do the same, eventually exposing the great lie of the western world.

Cathode Ray Tube return with their third original work in as many years – this time a snappy four-hander which challenges the essence of freedom and beauty.

Written by Alistair Powning with Michael Booth and produced by Jocelyn Brewer, Cathode Ray Tube build on their previous successes, That Old Chestnut and Thirty-Three.

As dynamic as it is accessible, this independent theatre collective continue to bring audiences a fresh Australian work that combines the familiarity of contemporary inner-city culture with the dynamics of a Greek tragedy.

Until 1 March, the Cathode kids are offering an irresistible early bird ticket special.  For the month of February, you can get your hands on two tickets for just $36.  By purchasing your tickets ahead of time, you not only secure your ticket to see this new work, but provide the upfront funds needed to bring independent theatre to the people.
