THE OWLS – self-titled EP
30 Aug 2010
If the rumours are true that rock is dead, The Owls will be playing at its funeral.
Formed in 2008 lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Josh Bailey, bass player Lewis Gillespie, lead guitarist Dan Flegg and drummer Matthew McDonough longed to create a sound which lacked the derivative monotony. They’ve accomplished this sound and will be releasing their self-titled EP this September, featuring the radio track ‘Go, Let It Go’.
The fusing of each members influences and a diplomatic approach to the collaborative writing effort quickly yielded dividends. A unique sound emerged from the band’s love of musical variety, comprising elements of dirty blues and alternative rock with liberal lashings of country roots sensibilities; progressive southern rock sounds and ethereal three-part harmonies and producing a unique alternative style that proves both dark and melodic.
The Owls have been relentlessly performing over the last two years, playing to packed venues in Newcastle & Sydney. They’ve also received airtime on FBi Radio and they’re constantly recording to refine and hone their unique Rock’n’Roll sound.
Their live shows offer the jagged edges expected from quality live rock. Distorted flurries of dark brooding bass and guitar riffs, supported with the gritty drawl of Josh Bailey’s vocals make up the kinetic energy of frenzied musical performance.
But perhaps The Owls greatest strength is their ability to effortlessly create spectral compositions, which drive the band’s silky melodies and produce a powerful musical journey.
